Reducing the use of petroleum for fuel does NOT threaten the oil companies. Other outlets are more lucrative, per barrel, so they will simply emphasize those. Do not expect significant opposition to conservation or alternatives - they are diversified, and as soon as any alternate technology proves itself they will simply invest in it.
