You can only vary the chip length by changing the screw. I found it was difficult to keep sharp. It is one of the few chunkers still on the market when fitted with a large pitched screw. I know someone modified it to slow speed use and used a conveyor to remove the chunks. Many disc type chippers can vary the chip length below a maximum by shortening the distance the blade projects from the disc (and concurrently resetting the anvil).
