Re: GAS-L: Dechlorinated char
Dear Harmon
I agree with Leland regarding the heavy metals, although we continue to
monitor the situation in case some nasty sneaks through the process or
contaminates the fuel from an unknown source. In this day and age one never
knows what finds its way into MDF and sewage sludges, and we have to remain
vigilant in whatever we do.
In my last posting I did give a description of the mechanism by which the
dioxin can form, and Leland kindly reinforced the message that in no way
must we allow these chemical formations become oxidised, i.e. combustion.
There is however something that must be held uppermost in everybody's mind
when discussing this subject, that not all gasification processes destroy
these chemical compounds. It is absolutely imperative that the gasification
process be one that in no way allows uncracked hydrocarbons to exit the
reduction zone where they can then condense to become tar or pyrolysis oils.
I am quite sure that there are more than a few who believe that you can just
scrub the gas to make it safe, but you must then deal with contaminated
scrub water.
It also becomes a safety problem when servicing this type of equipment where
all the residue inside condense, or impact,as someone must eventually get in
there to clean it all out. Never think that this is unimportant and it must
always be in remembered that these wastes are not just another fuel to be
gasified.
I would also like to remind everyone who is interested in the subjects we
discuss on this list that the gasification archives contain huge amounts of
information that seem to be repeatedly discussed as a new subject. We have
discussed dioxin and RDF previously and it would help if everyone refresh
their memories from time to time by looking at the archives.
