I'm not too sure...people use solar
power more as a backup, especially in the rural areas...
In terms of companies that offer this
facility--i think they're rather few, and dominated by the private
sector
They also tend to rely on 'regular
electricity' because the cost of installing panels and what not for solar power
is somewhat substantial.
In the urban areas--a few use solar
heating--the last house I lived in used solar power for water heating...as for
solar electricity-regular...
I believe global warming is also an
issue in many countries in southern Africa...though with the dominance of soo
many other pressing problems it's sort of lower down the list in terms of
priority. But it is reflected in many other ways., for example projected
cereal defecits as a result of variations in weather patterns...drought...too
much water...at the wrong time and too little at wanted times
e.t.c.
You can find out a lot more from the
state of environment reports that the environmental department
produces
The possibility for investment however
are vast...there is a demand for everything as long as it is marketed in the
proper manner as well as is cheap...i guess I should say relative
to the masses incomes....In
telecommunications, security and I think most likely alternative energy--ZESA
(the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority) controlled by the government of
Zimbabwe maintains a monopoly on the provision of electricity...as in many
African countries...however of late there has been some talk of
privatising-though not official...
hope this answers your
questions

Subject: alternative energy?
Is global warming an issue in developing nations like in
South Africa?
How about solar heating or solar electricity. I checked out
the sardac website. What do the people need most?

i'm sure you can write about
something else other than alternative energy topics...
I'm a Canadian
currently finishing my 1 year internship in Harare, Zimbabwe,
(until Sep 29th) working at this NGO - SARDC and in the democracy and
governance department.
At one time I used to be in the
environmental department..
We write and publish magazines;
newsletters state of the environment reports..
When I joined this listserv --
greenpower/environmental I wasn't really thinking it was about alternative
energy -- was thinking more environmental...but so far I've learned a
lot...keep on talkin
I could probably give you info on
environmental; gender; economic and political democratic trends and issues
present in the region
it's up to you..
otherwise keep on
talkin

Am I allowed to write a letter?
How do I receive letters?
Am I still on this mailing list?
If I am nothing seems to be happening.
