RE: GBlist: hybrid systems: passive solar + everything??

The thing that is so great about passive solar is that it can be cheaper,
PLUS it's advantages do double duty. Specifically, they enhance
lifestyle...such as natural light...sunny spaces...etc.

It's a matter of degrees (pardon the pun). When you start adding more
technical (and subsequently costly) aspects, such as trombe walls, etc.
Maybe it doesn't pencil out. But who wants to look at a trombe wall anyway?
In many cases it's a matter of design quality...not technical quality.
Thinking about where you put the windows...overhangs...angles...thermal
mass. Cetainly it doesn't have to cost more and certainly it comes no-where
near the extreme active solar story you posted.

We've learned our lessons about active solar, eh? (Personally I'm patiently
waiting for the time when they do make sense...designing to incorporate them
later because they will come back within the next 20 years or so, I
believe...maybe sooner). In the meantime...PASSIVE BABY!!

For the Saskatchewan Conservation House, you could apply many of the same
arguments to passive solar. Ie., if the heat load of the house requires $35
worth of electricity per year, what is the payback on any passive solar
features that you add in order to supply that heat? ...... Norbert
