Re: GBlist: hybrid systems: passive solar + everything??

 Bion,
You seem to have some reaction to the idea of the system described. You say
it will be expensive but the only added cost is 2 sensor switchs that detect
temps and turn on the existing pump that is already there to provide the
radiant floor system with circulation. If the heat seldom collects enough in
the slab (that is 2 1/2" and insulated off from the heated living space below
would not be "infinit" as it is within the insulated envelop and not in
anyway conected to the earth). the idea of adding a solar water heater to
help the boiler and the domestic water is one I have thought of and will be
able to add though easily the more expensive option for the amount of
benefit. the idea of putting concrete blocks on there side ( how do those fit
under a 2/12 inch slab on wood frame- take up a lot of head room) to then
move the overheated slab rather than using the already in place hydronic
distribution system seems off the mark as well. the difference between energy
use to run the blower in that and the pump in the hydronic is not worth any
expense. The downstairs, earth bermed area will also have an insulated slab
but that is on the earth as you were thinking. We will not try and circulate
overheated mass there for the same reasons you suggest- it just wouldn't
happen much and the bermed which is also a passive solar design will need so
little that any extra gizmos would be inappropriate.
thanks for the reaction though. boone
PS no need to remind me to check with local codes, inspectors around here
won't let you forget
