GBlist: replacing old natural gas furnaces

We're replacing an old central heating furnace. Existing furnace is in our
garage (an attached garage).
Please share advice regarding the best approach, for indoor air quality.
We also have a gas "fireplace" on an exterior wall, which I want to switch
to a wood-burning unit. Can I simply remove the fake logs, cap off the gas
pipe, and start burning wood? Current unit has gas pilot going year-round.
Thanks.
