Title: RE: GBlist: Home Depot, Certified Lumber, etc.

Mary-
I hope that you can believe that those of us who do not share your views are also concerned about verifiable certification and a public process that supports it.  Here in VT, our Act 250 makes it possible for the public to have some, but not a perfect, input process in land development issues.  Without it, much of VT would look like much of southern NH.  Is it perfect?  No, but without it things would be much worse.  The same is true for the FSC.  While I have no first hand knowledge of the charges that you make, the FSC is still there doing SOMETHING, which is much better than having nothing!  Let's support the best that we have, instead of letting the timber industry divide us so they can defeat any real certification.  Having an imperfect system is much easier to improve than having to start all over again.
I hear your sense of urgency and desperation about the Redwoods situation, but please try to bring us along with you instead of treating us like a bunch of people who don't care because we don't share 100% of your beliefs.  That will surely be counterproductive.

John,

We'll see if the Fishers get certified. If they don't, my faith in the new
system will be strengthened--though my criticisms of the certification
process are completely valid (the FSC admitted as much at a recent meeting,
especially with regard to incorporating public oversight) and will remain
until the FSC addresses them.

Sorry to be so jaded--in California, we're used to seeing the environment
sold down the river by government, non-profits with corporate connections,
and corporations with progressive images.

Cheers!
