I think the article was saying that it is good to allow cites to be 
densely populated rather than to encourage people to each buy their 
own spread and plant their own concrete--or otherwise--footprint to 
live.  It acknowledged that a side-effect of urban life is over-
consumption (don't we know that!), but that there are a lot of 
positive benefits from living that way.  The main positive point 
seems to be the smaller amount of land used for actual day-to-day 
living.  The authors, however, neglect to focus much on the effects 
of producing the large amounts of materials consumed within the 
cities, etc.
