GBlist: FW: plans for affordable green houses
Hi Folks,
Since Beverley is busy moving, let me jump in and lend a bit of a
hand. The plan book for infill housing and in-town commercial was put
together for the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (that's the area
between West Palm Beach and the "Space Coast"). I am sure they have a web
site (and may have posted some of it) but I don't have the url handy. Their
phone number is (561) 221-4060.
The Miami Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is about half way through
building a 190 unit green neighborhood called Jordan Commons in one of the
areas destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. What you are looking for is
the original designs commissioned by the now-defunct Homestead chapter, not
the "as-built", unfortunately. Their phone number is (305) 670-2224.
Miami-Dade County government will soon be conducting an
architectural competition, with the local AIA Chapter, for affordable,
green, single-family homes and duplexes. It will be open to all comers who
have a clue about the South Florida Building Code. The winning designs that
neighborhood groups find agreeable will then be "pre-permitted" on hundreds
of vacant, County-controlled lots -- eliminating time delays and almost all
soft costs for any contractor who would like to construct infill housing.
Once the winners are chosen (probably October), detailed information about
those plans will be available on the web site of the County's Building
Department. I'll post to the group when it goes up.

Carl,
I know that Sustainable S. Florida hired a company out of Michigan to put
together a plan book of infill housing and other similar sustainable
buildings, including commercial in-town developments. Once I get moved
and have a moment to look I will try to find out how to get a copy of
that plan book for you. I also second the previous suggestions of
checking with Habitat. I also seem to remember that the Austin
Greenbuilding group had put together a set of designs for low income,
possibly in concert with Habitat or some similar group.
