GBlist: Gandhi. The original LEED author?

In the latest edition of Mother Jones there is an article about an English
architect that settled in southern India and has spent his career designing
and building with locally available materials and passive cooling techniques
in that hot, humid climate. In fact, he notes that Mahatma Gandhi once told
him that one should have to search no further than five miles for
construction materials for one's building. It's not on-line yet but very
good stuff especially relating to the thread on "affordable" housing.
The article:
he Brick Master of Kerala
by Adam Hochschild
Inspired by the Mahatma, Laurie Baker is using mud, brick, and clamshells to
build low-cost housing in southern India. His ecofriendly creations meld the
best of East and West.
