RE: GBlist: alternative wallboard

Title: RE: GBlist: alternative wallboard

I love Homasote; it's readily available here on the East Coast from building suppliers. I typically use it for fabric-wrapped panels and tackable surfaces. It's a pretty flaky material, nasty to cut. The biggest problem is that it is NOT dimensionally stable in any way, especially when exposed to variations in humidity. It was originally designed as a subfloor and works great in that application. My tackable panels tend to warp, bend, spring, twist and whipsaw as the tension from the fabric pulls the material out of plane. I can't imagine using it as a drywall substitute. If one does try to use it, I would recommend 50% more screws than drywall.

"Instead of drywall, a Homasote product made from recycled newsprint is used
for wall partitions."  [from GreenClips.157]

Anyone have any knowledge of this type of product?  Price, availability,
ease of use, suppliers, etc.?
