RE: GBlist: alternative wallboard
Did some more research on the Homasote site. They offer their panels as
fabric covered decorative panels, which could be used by themselves. They
also have non-fabric covered panels available, but they are marketed as a
sound-deadening substrate, not a wallboard replacement. They must be left
with 1/8" to 1/4" gap on all sides to account for expansion; no taping or
mudding allowed. Also they are very clear that you must provide solid
blocking at ALL edges, and glue the panels to the framing.
So the surface panels I read about when I started this thread were probably
fabric-covered, which I can only imagine would be significantly more
expensive than gypboard. But with no taping, mudding, painting, or etc.
required, maybe it would be a wash, costwise?

I love Homasote; it's readily available here on the East Coast from building
suppliers. I typically use it for fabric-wrapped panels and tackable
surfaces. It's a pretty flaky material, nasty to cut. The biggest problem is
that it is NOT dimensionally stable in any way, especially when exposed to
variations in humidity. It was originally designed as a subfloor and works
great in that application. My tackable panels tend to warp, bend, spring,
twist and whipsaw as the tension from the fabric pulls the material out of
plane. I can't imagine using it as a drywall substitute. If one does try to
use it, I would recommend 50% more screws than drywall.

"Instead of drywall, a Homasote product made from recycled newsprint is used
for wall partitions." [from GreenClips.157]
Anyone have any knowledge of this type of product? Price, availability,
ease of use, suppliers, etc.?
