GBlist: 12volt systems

Forum,
	In the process of educating myself about 12volt lighting systems.  Would
like to use them for residential interior as alternative to much-preferred
compact fluorescent fixtures because I don't have the space above the
ceilings for cans and don't want surface mounted fixtures.  
	Can anyone send me to a site (s) or a book that will inform me about basic
dos and don'ts for 12v. systems?  eg type of transformers best to use for
what situation?  length of run to these?  voltage drop for length of run?
consequences of dimming on all of the above? ie a good all around 'course'
on 12volt lighting that will get me up to speed on what I need to consider
to install such a system.
	My several local electrical contractors have no experience with 12v
systems (even the simple outdoor set-ups) so I'm going to have to spec what
I need.
