I've been reading over the 12v and cfl comments and
looking over some of the literature I have on hand and all I want to say is I'm
dissapointed in all the comments. Maybe frustrated is a more accurate comment.
I'm disturbed by inaccuracies like 'transformers sucking energy' and 'bulbs
burning out' - this kind of advice needs to be qualified if it is
advice.
Lighting efficiently may equate with using lights
efficiently but does not always equate with using 'efficient' lighting products.
CFL's are not a universal answer and despite the transition to electronic
ballasting its a far from perfected product and the good ones are not
inexpensive solutions in themselves - and then getting them to work well in a
space with all the right checks and balances is not an easy project unless the
end result is a grossly overlit or poorly lit space (not much efficiency there).
Same is basically true of all the other options. I'm tending to look at lighting
control as being more of a solution - providing specific levels of lighting for
specific uses - reducing wattage levels to 5% for passage through a room is
ultimately more efficient than an efficient bulb at full wattage.
Its a design problem, not just a product solution -
not yet anyway. And only because the damm stuff is so complex it takes a
designer to wade through it all.
