Dana Meadows

Dear friends

In case you had not yet heard, Dana (Donella) Meadows died this afternoon
after a week and a half bout with bacterial menengitis which had put her
in a coma. She was an amazing, brilliant woman with much to share and
share she did. She will be sorely missed by those who knew her, those who
knew of her, and by so many more people who benefitted from her presence
here with us and didn't even know it.

I am deeply saddened by her death and at the same time inspired by her
life and the things she did. From "The Limits to Growth" and "Beyond the
Limits" to all her teaching at Dartmouth and elsewhere, she leaves behind
a huge legacy of work and of people who have been influenced by her. I'm
just one of far too many to know or count, who are grateful for knowing
her and having her in their lives.

One of my favorite pieces of Dana's writing appeared in Whole Earth
magazine a few years ago, entitled "Places to Intervene in a System."
It's typical of the level and depth of her insights into systems and how
they work (http://www.wholeearthmag.com/articlebin/109.html).

Dana had a great sense of humor to go along with her brilliance and I
hope we can figure out some way to honor her that will keep us laughing
while we change the world. There's still a lot to do and though it would
be easier done with her physical presence, we'll have to make do with her
magnificent spirit instead.

With love and warmest wishes

David Eisenberg
