RE: [GBlist] Passive Solar/Thermal Mass Comparison

A good source for thermal mass info is a book by architect David Wright
called (I Think) Natural Solar Architecture. It was published about 1980.
It also includes lots of other good stuff about passive solar design.

The issue of where to put insulation regarding mass depends on what you want
to accomplish and your climate. For the most part insulation is best placed
outside the mass and the mass is kept inside the building envelope to
equilize temperature swings.

Another good book that deals with mass and sizing mass is The Passive Solar
Handbook by Edward Mazria. It was also published about 1980.

Cheers,
Ralph Bicknese

Subject: [GBlist] Passive Solar/Thermal Mass Comparison

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could direct me to a good resource on a
comparison materials used for thermal mass. I have heard some discussion on
this but would be interested in learning which materials have the best
thermal mass properties and how others compare with them.

Also, it seems that the use of insulation is counter productive in
conjunction with a thermal mass. One person has suggested that the use of
insulation just increases the time lag associated with a thermal mass. I
would be interested in any thoughts you have on this.

Thanks,
