RE: [GBlist] thermal mass

Ted and all:

Ted makes some good points. But, he makes mass sound a little scary. After
20 years of designing buildings using various degrees of mass for thermal
effect, I am not aware of amy of the problems Ted mentioned regarding
thermal mass in those buildings.

Thermal mass is one of several important strategies to consider in creating
buildings that perform better. It is a very simple concept that when used
with a little forethought can have very positive benefits and has few
drawbacks. Like any building technology one needs to know what they are
doing before applying it.

Cheers,
Ralph Bicknese

Thermal mass, as in a mass that holds heat. No problem so far. The term mass
tells us that its too much of something. Is it
heavy, expensive, ugly, dangerous or harmful? Will it harbor mold, bacteria,
creatures? Will it burn, rot leak, collapse, erode or corrode? Will it cost
more to gather, build, maintain or provide space for, than it will ever
return a savings on? What if it doesn't work? Have I built around, on, into
or on top of it? Can I remove, modify, repair, disguise or live with it the
rest of my life?
Are these properties you might to know about? Ted
Always glad for the visit
