Re: [GBlist] small package wastewater treatment systems?

Hi David

one of the best passive type systems for environmental performance I know of
is a biological filter developed at the university of waterloo and then
commercialized. Know as the waterloo bio-filter I think. Yes here is the
link http://www.waterloo-biofilter.com/. Capable of small to large flows
(expandable - I think). I remeber the univ. were also working on a carbon
mat intended to replace drainage gravel in field runs that effectively
removed nitrates - don't know if that has been commercialized. The biofilter
built on sand filter technology which is the next step down for passive but
has the potential of being site-built - David Venhuizen has done some
wonderful work on a recirculating and de-nitryfiying sand filter treatment
plan - following his name should give you some links - I remember him having
some cad drawings for construction.

Both of the above systems require little energy - and can be expanded upon
or later incorporated in different ways - you can never have too much
treatment.

there are numerous aeration systems around - for me the key is
denitrification as that can have the most toxic affect on the immediate
environment.

luck
