Hello Carmine:

Don't know about Energy Star ratings, perhaps someone else on the list does.

Reclaiming heat from clothes dryer seems like a good idea, but you'd
probably need a separate device for that job - I'd guess somebody out there
is already making one.

We did work on an off grid house designed by Allen-Kani Associates
(Toronto) that ran the HRV exhaust to also provide the ventilation for a
Clivus toilet, thus saving one fan. Back in 1985 the same desigers used an
air-to-water heat pump in a solar heating application to move excess heat
from the living space into the domestic hot water tank.

It took a long time for hvac contractors to accept HRV's up here, but it
happened eventually, after about 10 years, due to the push given by our
R-2000 building performance standard. It is a voluntary certification
program, including training and certification of contractors and blower
door tests of the finished building. Originally, the Canadian government
gave contractors a $6,000 subsidy on their first R-2000 house to offset the
inevitable learning curve the first time you learn new construction
details. Interestingly, during the 1981 recession, these were the only
builders who weren't out of work.

Best ...... Norbert
