I am an often reader/lurker and sometimes contributor to the 
list.  However, I don't find the off-topic discussions problematic.  In 
fact, there are some "on-topic" discussions that deal with issues in which 
I have no interest.  These are easy to delete.  I find this much more 
acceptable than having someone else controlling what goes on the list and 
what doesn't.
