check out 95 CABO table 602.6 for dimensioned lumber headers, or Table
602.6.2 for plywood box headers.  I often simply double up the bandboard and
do not use any conventional header above the opening.  This eleimates the
problem of differential shrinkage which occurs with deeper dim. lumber, and
provides a better insulation cavity.

might be time to find another engineer....
