We've done this too, with the advantages Alan cites, with engineer approval.
On one-story buildings, we've used a continuous Laminated Veneer Lumber
header, let into wall studs, across all bearing walls. The extra work of
prepping the studs is offset by there being no need to build individual
headers. Future remodeling is easier, too.
