RE: [GBlist] Sustainable Design Questions

Title: RE: [GBlist] Sustainable Design Questions

1).  ASU has at least one professor active on the Scottsdale Green Building committee.  It's also a source for some info - there's a checklist available which can be used as a guideline.  http:\\www.ci.scottsdale.az.us/greenbuilding

2).  I didn't attend, but there was a lecture given which if I remember was directed at builders and why they should build green.

3). Don't know
4). I have an opinion. One aspect of building green is energy efficiency.  I got interested in building green because I wanted to build a dream house that wasn't going to cost me a fortune to cool & heat.  Consumers can relate this easily because it's directly affecting their bottom line.  It's not that hard to take that same argument to commercial building - if the landlord's paying the bills, he saves money. If the renter is paying the bills, they're paying less.  2 buildings side-by-side, one costs $500/month in utilities and one costs $1,000 - which would you choose.  Easy sell.  Same argument goes for water conservation if water costs are high in your area.

In other words, sometimes the words "saving the environment" may turn people off because they immediately think of "tree huggers".  I have nothing against people being more passionate about the environment than I am, but the general public I suspect isn't quite ready for it.

5).  See #1 - Look at Scottsdale's website.

Subject: [GBlist] Sustainable Design Questions

Hello.

I am an architecture student at Syracuse University.  I have been reading a
lot and doing a lot of research about Sustainable Design for a program that
I will run at my school in the Spring 2002 and also a research paper I am
doing now. I had a few questions that I wanted to post and see the type of
response I would get back? I have posted those questions below. Feel free to
email me at trubin@syr.edu

Thank you for your help!

Todd

Questions regarding Sustainable Design:

1. Do you have a suggestion on speakers that have a knowledge of sustainable
design that they can talk about the basics or help moderate a discussion for
college architectural students?

2. I am in support of sustainable design.  I think that it is a good idea
and that it is the wave of the future. The question I have is, in your
opinon do you think that sustainable design is just a fad or can it actually
work? What are ways to encourage people to think green and use green
products?

3. The architecture firm HOK has developed an online system to help its
architects investigate and select green products, but how much are those
architects using the
online system?  Also the New York City Department of Design and Construction
(DDC) developed a High Performance Building Guidelines to enable the DDC to
commission high performance public facilities that improve the general
standards for good design in the metropolitan region of New York.  Is this
really happening?  Are architects and designers following the DDC?

4. In order for people to start thinking green, do you suggest people to
start thinking about saving the environment and learning the basics, and
then they will see why it is important to invest their money in designing
and building green?

5. Do you have suggestions of different groups or organizations that I could
call to  get more information concerning sustainable design?

Any other information is appreciated. Thank you for your help and time!!
