Regarding boric acid:
It works really well, not just for ants - it's one of the
only substances that roaches don't learn to avoid.

I do want to mention, though, that some people are
allergic to it.  Also, if there are very young children
around, it's important to keep them from getting into
it (it is not completely benign).
