[GBlist] Question on the use of smart glass
This e-mail is subject to the disclaimer set out below.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
Dear Sir ,
I am currently investigating the use of smart glazing materials for building
applications and am interested in hearing your views in how interesting
these materials might be.Essentially I am interested in the use of
electrochromic glasses - glasses which can be made to change from clear to
dark by the application of a modest current. Current research suggests that
electrochromic windows have the potential to reduce lighting and peak
cooling loads by 70% and offer wide modulation in transmissibility, with a
degree of wavelength selective. The initial cost may be slightly higher then
normal window glass but the benefits, especially in terms of energy savings,
are apparent.
Before I progress further in this work (we currently have a small
development model of an electrochromic window which works well) I would like
to canvas your opinions on the attractiveness of the technology.
Specifically:
* Would this technology be interesting for architectural applications
* What is the increase in cost over normal glazing materials which
would preclude you being interested in this material
* What volumes of this material could possibly be used
If you would like to discuss any of these points further please do not
hesitate to contact me further via phone or email. In the meantime, many
thanks for your help,
Kindest regards
Dr. Philip Blazdell
