[GBlist] surface mining operations

Dear Group,

I am currently working on an assessment of potential environmental impacts
of a surface mining project for topsoil and aggregate rock in Northern
California. I am specifically worried about groundwater and air quality
impacts of surface mines. Has anyone out there been through this type of
review before, and do you have any experience with unintended or hidden
environmental effects of such activities. I know the obvious effects (dust
creation, habitat destruction, noise and road impacts, etc), but I am
wondering if there are longer term or "hidden" impacts of surface mines that
are typically overlooked. Thanks for any help.
