[GBlist] Re: Small cabin suggestion

Hi Craig:

I question the "no kitchen needed" statement in a big way. If you want
your mom to feel dependant and as good as institutionalised, that's a good
way to do it, though neither of you may realise it until too late.
A full kitchen probably isn't needed if she is going to take her major meals
with your family.
But food and the ability to get it when you need it are central to our
feelings of safety and security. A small hot plate, a microwave and an
half size fridge would be a good compromise maybe?
Think about if she would want a cup of tea in the middle of the night? We
grannies tend to sleep less at night the more grannified we get, and a cup
of tea at 4 a.m. often goes down really well. Would she want to go to
your kitchen and disturb everyone? What about the weather where you
live? Would she have to put on her long woolies for part of the year to
come and get a glass of lemonade or a piece of toast to nibble? (We tend
to snack more and eat less at mealtimes too - your stomach often feels
better this way). What if she should make friends and one or two of them
come to visit, or the local pastor drops in? Would she want to drag them
over to your kitchen in order to do the hospitable thing and offer a
beverage and a bit of cake?
Please think this over carefully. I know this is not BUILDING advice in
the sense that you meant it, but never-the-less, I think it's very important.
