Re: [GBlist] Low tech green roof
I know of a couple of roofs that have used polyethylene to good affect. The
problem however is not finding a material that works - but rather having to
find a material that is 'acceptable' for use. By acceptable I mean a
material that can be warranted, insured, etc. A green roof is still
fundamentally a roof which covers and protects all the construction,
furnishings and possessions underneath it.
Roof warranties are typically provided by the manufacturer, and generally as
a system - where all the components and assembly details are specified.
Variations on these details can void a warranty in the event of failure. You
also need to work with trades certified as installers, etc. So the range of
materials and options available starts to shrink if the roof has to meet any
kind of specification for financing or insurance.
As cities implement green roof programs, the range of options available
increases but then so do the general requirements.
