[GBlist] running cost free dehumidifier

About 40 years ago there were advertisements in England for a device
which attracted water from damp air without the need for a power source:
the collected water could be poured away and the device reused again and
again. There was no need to dry any component in the oven.

I have not heard of any since. Does anyone know how effective it is,
where to get one or how to build one?

I seem to recall that this involved crystals of sodium carbonate or
sulphate thinly coated with plastic.
