Re: [GBlist] Wood: "recycled" and/or "rapidly renewable"?
<It takes a lot of energy for a tree to get to 4-5" dia. but then
significantly
less energy for the tree to add significantly more fiber every subsequent
year of growth. Also in its infancy a trees energy is directed to its own
benefit, as it matures that benefit is directed more subtly to the soil, the
air, etc. so harvesting a tree at a 50-60 yr cycle would provide a little
more benefit all round.

well said john,
there is a woodlot owner in bc by the name of merv wilkinson who refused to
clear cut as the province told him 60 years ago,
he calculated his growth for the year and cut 90% of that,
by doing this he adds roughly 10% to his total board feet each year,
basically he skims the interest,
he has 300 acres of old growth forest trees that are 600 to 1500 years old!
the trees contain rediculously more board feet of timber per square foot of
land (than the clearcut mono-culture method) for the trees are 6 to 12 feet
in diameter and 100 to 300 feet tall! not to mention he has an amazing
ancient forest around him instead of a tree farm...
when he harvests each year and phones the local mills they race to his
property!
this is how i wish we would have done it from the start, imagine :)
