Maureen:
Low
e glass does cut down the amount of solar radiation passing through the
glass for passive solar heating.
However it also cuts down on the heat loss through the glass in
winter and the heat gain through the glass in
summer.
In
most cases low e glass will permit a net gain in solar heating for the
winter. I have low e glass on
my south windows and on a sunny winter day the heat gain is considerable
even when it is only 10 or 20 degrees F
outside.
One
way to satisfy oneself about how much net gain or loss you will have is to
run a computer simulation. Some
software is available online.
If you do not have access to a simulation program or do not feel you
have the knowledge to run one yourself, contact the window company and see
if they can run one for your climate.
Cheers,

Subject: [GBlist] Low E
glass
We
are building a house in Upstate New York,(42 North latitude). Does
anyone have an opinion on whether Low-E glass on the South side will
interfer with solar gain in the winter?
Thanks.
Happy New Year!
