SB: Seeking southern strawbale and rammed-earth examples
Dear natural building fans,
I am looking for examples of strawbale and rammed-earth buildings in the
Southern US. They would be particularly useful if they were within a
reasonable (4-5 hour) drive of Durham, NC. I am a member of a committee
evaluating possible building systems for the construction of a new meeting
house for the Durham Friends Meeting. I am particularly interested in
finding homes/buildings that have been up for a while since we are
interested in seeing how these techniques weather under a Carolina
climate. If you know of a good place to visit or people I could speak
with, please let me know the location, contact information for the owners,
and the age of the building if you know it.
Also, if you have any opinions pros and cons on the applicability of these
methods for a NC climate (temperate spring and fall, short but cool
winter, intensely hot and humid summer/rainfall ranges from hurricane to
drought), I'd be interested in hearing them. Success stories or failures
of these approaches in this climate would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Airlie Sattler Rose
