[GBlist] Re: [be2] exterior insulated shutters close automatically overwindows at night time

hi debra,

(no particular case study)

However, if the insulating panels are hinged at the top and can drop, or
otherwise, move into place by gravity, then a release mechanism can be
activated, thermally, to set that in motion, by having a latch hold the
panel open, until the dropping temperature (daily early evening low sun)
activates a greenhouse thermal vent arm, to release the latch, to drop
the panel, to insulate the window, to keep warm, to save fuel, etc.

The shutters are opened next day by human power.

Shurcliff's "Thermal Shutters and Shades," has a few bits of
excavated information from c1980, enclosed following.

APPENDEX 8

AUTOMATIC ACTUATORS FOR
WINDOWS, SHUTTERS, AND SHADES

AMBIENT-TEMPERATURE-POWERED ACTUATORS

Bramen Company, Inc., of PO Box 70, Salem, MA
01970, makes Thermofor, an actuator that provides
a stroke of 2 inch and a force of l00 pounds (lb)
or, with use of a special mechanical linkage, a
stroke of 12 inches and a force of 10 pounds (lb).
A 20 F degree temperature change causes the device
to operate. Cost: about $50.00.

Dalen Products, Inc., of 201 Sherlake Drive,
Knoxville, TN 37922, makes SolarVent, which can
automatically open a window at 75 degrees F and
close it at 68 degrees F. The device has a stroke of
8 in. and produces a force of 9 lb. Cost: about $25.

SOLAR-POWERED ACTUATOR

Zomeworks Corp. produces a pair of canisters,
partly filled with a freon material, that may be
attached to a pivoted and well-balanced louver in
such a way that the louver will open or close de-
pending on whether the sun is or is not. shining
brightly. Such devices are used, for example, to
control Skylids.

ELECTRICALLY-POWERED ACTUATOR

Joel Berman Associates, Inc., of 102 Prince St.,
New York, NY 10012, produces an Electro Shade
System that includes a plastic and fabric shade and
a reversible electric motor, the latter being within
the main roller. A brake is included and may be
used to stop the shade at any desired position.
Control may be local or remote, manual or automatic.
