[GBlist] minimum clearances, sink base
Clark:
"I stand a little over six feet and have always had a problem with small
cars and get a backache brushing my teeth at the level of the "normal"
sink."
I have this problem too. I've custom designed sink bases that are about 8"
higher than "normal" and they work quite well for me. A cheaper solution is
to make a box frame for under the "standard height" sink base cabinet out of
2 X 8 (or 2 X 10) lumber. The box should match the outside dimensions of
the bottom of the cabinet, including the toe space set back. You can
retrofit some older sinks with extension drains and new water lines if the
mirror and/or medicine cabinet is high enough above the sink top. Run
strips of flooring around the outsides of the box to make it match the bath
decorations, or paint/stain and put vinyl mop boards at the base.
Unlike the specially designed sink base, the retrofit wastes all the space
under the standard base. If you want to get fancy, you can cut an opening
in the base and add a door. If you disguise the door, it makes a good place
to store valuables.
