Here's a link to a .pdf file detailing a solar hot
water system that can preheat the water to take load
off the tankless heater.

Capture heat from the sun to preheat the water, then
bring it to temperature at the point of use using the
tankless system you're describing. 

Haven't done this - just considering it at this point.
I'd be interested in feedback from others that may
have combined solar hot water heating with a tankless
heater.
