RE: [GBlist] deep well submersibles - AC or DC
I will recommend the following for your well electrical feeds. Interrupt
the feed with a contactor that breaks all feeds down hole including the
ground on a loss of electrical. On your topside ground rod make it multiple
rods with fertilizer, lime, and marble dust around the rods. Water the rods
ever so often to keep up ground conductivity. Beware of potential that can
be generated in diverse electrical systems especially during electrical
activity. Given you have a large enough holding tank you can then add a
MARS or similar Time Delay (8MININUTE ADJ) (available in any HVACR parts
place) in the coil circuit. If the holding tank is not large enough
normally you will need a separate contactor for control. The initial
interruption of electrical service from lightning is generally not the
damaging one. It is the one that follows soon thereafter that can go down
well even on the ground and blow your motor. This is what I have been doing
with all my wells and even the municipal ones I service. It is very
effective in preventing lightning damage. This will also help with IGBTs in
your drives and inverters. Do not depend on MOVs as they are a plasma jet
looking for a place to happen. Careful how you use them as they start fires.
That Time Delay is also excellent for protecting (24 VAC Y leg series) air
conditioners. It is ten dollars well spent. I think the relays might cost
less than $50. If someone needs a schematic and parts list drop me an email
and Ill visiolite something into Word. Other great things to add are a
whole house filter, pressure regulator, pressure relief and an UV Exposure
unit.
Of course this is all my honest opinion<s
