RE: [GBlist] "Green" kitchen cabs
Wheatboard is not prohibitively expensive. When bought in individual
sheets, wheatboard (isobord) is slightly more expensive than K3 ($20 vs
$18.50CAN) and less expensive than medite ($27CAN), when bought by the
pallet it is ~ 20% less expensive than K3 (as per Goodfellows Inc.). Since
this is a housing project, its possible that the wheatboard can be bought
by the pallet. Another thing to consider to save costs/waste - Design the
cabinets to be modular units that can be cut from a 4'x8' sheet without
leftovers, this is applicable whether its mdf or isobord. I've had
complaints about working with wheatboard when it isn't laminated, as it has
different absorption properties for stain and sealer than mdf but once
familiar with the product and which coatings work its no longer a problem.
Pionite has reasonable priced laminates and makes an effort to be
environmentally conscious http://www.pionite.com/environ.html . I have had
AFM safecoat adhesive recommended to me, but haven't used it in this
application so don't know of its suitability... if it doesn't work for the
laminate it can be used for flooring instead
(http://www.cbrproducts.com/afm.html#adhesives).
Regards,
Brenda

Barbara:
The cost of wheat board tends to be prohibitive for low budget projects.
