[GBlist] Now here's some interesting news

Study says pace of builder consolidation to pick up

National Report - January 28 - Within 10 years, the 20 largest home builders
will build 75 percent of the homes built in the United States, according to a
study by Andersen Corporate Finance, a division of Arthur Andersen.
The report, "The Impending Consolidation of the Homebuilding Industry,"
predicts that the sector is entering a period of uncertainty, with demand for
new homes declining and home builders’ profits being shaved by higher land
prices, lot shortages and longer approval periods.

Larger builders, with relatively easy access to land and cash, greater
financial reserves and significant purchasing power, are better positioned to
survive in that environment, the study contends.

The trend has already begun, the report said. In 1997 the nation’s top 100
builders built about 24 percent of all new homes. In 2000, that number had
risen to 37 percent.
