Hello!
Here are my two cents:

Washing machines: We have a Frigidaire front loader. It works ok but I
certainly would go for a European model if I had the choice again. Yes,
we would have spent twice as much for a Miele but:
If you are concerned about getting your clothes clean, in my experience,
the European models do a far better job.
They also save much more water and spin better (which means less time
and energy in the dryer.)

By the way, I hang my clothes (you cant beat that in terms of energy
efficiency).

Definitively look for energy consumption and not just efficiency. I
recommend the smallest bottom freezer models. (Bottom freezers are the
most efficient, side by side the least efficient.
