I know it's self-serving, but I always think a good, concise book will get
the basics across in the most efficient manner. From the Oikos Bookstore, I
would recommend these titles for their broad coverage:

    Primer on Sustainable Building
    The Natural House
    Homing Instinct

You may see others that strike your fancy, especially if you're leaning
toward a particular building approach, such as passive solar, straw bale,
etc. You can search for these titles in the online bookstore at:
