Not exactly imaging, but you can get low cost point-and-shoot IR 
thermometers from Raytek (Graingers carries a line of them). We use ours 
for all kinds of stuff, including temperature studies on masonry heaters 
and masonry bake ovens. You can go around the  walls of a house and spot 
missing insulation, etc., etc. Great for making waffles. A wonderful tool.
