[GBlist] hydrogen as fuel

Hi,

I recently talked to my brother the chemist about hydrogen fuel cells.  I asked him if he thought that there would be a problem with hydrogen fuel cells making the environment "wetter".  I guess I still don't quite understand the situation with them, but my bro said that the hydrogen that would be used for the cells would come from water, therefore the amount of water in our ecosystem would remain the same.  Now, my question is, would that make any sense?  Won't it take energy to separate the hydrogen and oxygen atoms?  Is there any energy gained this way?  Or is it a case of borrowing from Peter to pay Paul?

just wondering.....
