Re: [GBlist] windows and water

Tom: Your system is very interesting. Do you have to clean the coils very
often?

The reason I ask is that many people have inquired about using one of our
gravity film heat exchangers (www.gfxtechnology.com) for the application you
describe. They have coils on the outside and a smooth interior for easy
cleaning.

I have experimented with coiling copper tubing directly inside the stove
pipe. I then hooked that to an old hot water tank that was a closed system.
I circulated the water through the coils with a small pump while the fire
was going. I would burn my fire hot with the draft completely open so that
the wood would burn clean and not create residue on the coils. I had an
outside air intake for the stove so that no warm air was sucked out of the
room. I monitored the stove pipe temperature which would reach over 1000
degrees F. below the coils and then be reduced to 300-400 degrees above the
coils ( cooler than most stovepipes under normal use)
I would burn a fire for appox. 1 hour ever morning and evening. it would
raise the water temp. in the tank to 170 degrees. this would radiate
throughout the day and night and keep my small house comfortably warm. ( I
removed the insulation from the tank so that it could radiate, I have always
thought this would be a good system for a retrofit of an old house heated
with radiators)
