Re: PV: RE: Who's really using pv

Sunday, January 21, 2001 9:22

Eric,

When do you plan to install this large PV system? Have you looked into
nickel iron batteries? Every consider co-generation? YOU said that you run
you generator a lot. Just think of all the waste heat that literally goes up
the chimmy every time you run the genertor? Ecery feel the exhaust pipes
coming out of the generator? Hot isn't it? Why not capture the waste heat
and turn it into hot water, store it, and use it for a radiant floor heat
system and domestic hot water? Sure wood heat is great, but it is a lot of
work and has pollutants of its own. Why keep throwing heat energy away from
that stinky, noisy, generator? If your back up generator is water cooled it
is fairly easy to get a lot of hot water. Also you mention a 30 kW diesel
generator for your new system. You might also want to think about harnessing
the waste heat from that generator as well and have a community hot tub or
if the houses are not to far away have a distributed hot water.

Also why not have each house have its own system? To me a central system in
theary is fine, but in reality it may not work as well as invisioned because
one family may be very energy concious while the other family may be very
wasteful. Why should the family who is wasteful be subsidized by the family
who is doing it right ? I hope I have given you some food for thought.

I just hate to see all that waste heat when all these people who run back up
generators for PV systems could put it to use and reduce there dependence on
fossil fuels.

Just to give you an idea of how much hot water you COULD be heating while
running that back up fossil fuel generator - you can get about 470 gallons
of HOT water a 180°F per hour!!!!!!!!!! I bet you can think of a lot of
things to do with all that hot water ..........enough said!

Sincerely,

John
