Re: [pvusers] Fw: Energy Pig Frig
1) What is the room ambient temperature?
2) How much space do you have around the refrigerator (sides, top,
back)?
3) How full is the refrigerator and with what?
Here's some advice about using a refrigerator.
Refrigerator Energy Saving Tips
1. Refrigerators and freezers operate more efficiently when full but not
over-crowded. It takes more energy to keep air cold than to keep food or
liquids cold. Allow enough space between items for air to circulate
freely.
2. Locate your refrigerator away from the direct flow of warm air from
the cooking stove, heating ducts, or direct sunlight.
3. Use a thermometer in your refrigerator and freezer. Operate the
refrigerator at 34 to 37 F (1 to 3 C). Separate freezers are kept at 0
to 5 F (-18 to -15 C). Refrigerator/freezers with one outside door
should be 15 to 20 F (-9 to -7 C) in the freezer compartment.
4. Clean the condenser coils a couple times a year. Dust build-up causes
your refrigerator to work harder and use more electricity.
5. Uncovered liquids cause frost to form that require more frequent
defrosting. Keep containers sealed.
6. Allow hot food to cool slightly before placing in the refrigerator.
Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Thaw frozen
foods in the refrigerator overnight and they should be ready to use by
the next evening.
7. Open and close the refrigerator door as quickly as possible. Children
can be taught that energy conservation is fun by making a game of
getting what you want out of the refrigerator and closing the door
quickly.
