Gasifiers in the Netherlands

Dear Stovers and Charcoal Enthusiasts

I received this mesage from Robert Van Der Plas. I asked him about the
diesel-generator he wants to run in Moçambique on gassified biomass. He is
looking for an operatro/ contractor to move there and own/operate the unit.
It is a private initiative power for the community generation project.

Zero emission charcoaling?

Regards
Crispin

The gasification can be done with both diesel engines (80% fuel
replacement) or gas engines (100% fuel repl.). Depending on the economics,
load characteristics, and local technical infrastructure you select the
route, also whether to use charcoal or wood.

The firm I am working with started commercial charcoal production in Ghana
& China (2-4000 t/yr), after years of experience in NL with zero emission
charcoal production: www.carbo.nl. There is more to charcoal production
than the yield: one also needs to be concerned about the carbon content of
the charcoal; 45% yield is extremely high. In the NL plant they are now
experimenting with capturing the heat (all gases are burnt of in the
carbonization process.) to produce power in a steam engine.

I seem to remember that in Brazil they combine gasification with charcoal
production. Not sure how it functions now.

Regards,

                 Robert
