Re: patents

Dear Friends,

The policy at Aprovecho is not to patent any invention. Larry Winiarski
advises us, as I've read in responses to this thread, that only the rich can
defend patents. It's very easy to make a slight modification that muddies
the water so much that only attornies benefit.

Some may not know that Aprovecho Research Center is run by folks who believe
in voluntary simplicity. This lifestyle frees seven staff members to pursue
their various vocations, interests, dreams without a lot of reference to
money and power. Full time staff are paid $450/month so you're rich as long
as you stay on our farm. We provide ourselves with self built homes, home
grown food, home grown entertainments and we live very much in modern
society, with computers, videos, books, art, drama, etc.

My feeling is that invention which serves humanity is its own reward. The
need for money can be best satisfied by conservation. "Best" choice because
it's easiest, ecological, fulfilling, gives you a lot more time to
invent....

IMO,

Dean
