Dear Kirk My son Desmond, who arrive in China on Wednesday, had already found a job by Friday so he took a train to Taiyuan in Shanxi Prov to visit his twin brother. He said the smoke and air pollution on the way, even in rural areas, was unbelievable with visibility down to 500 metres sometimes. I know if you live in Taiyuan City you have a perpetual sore throat. I would think that a stove and furnace development program would be of the highest priority in a place like that. I have decided to attack the coal burning stoves problems be reducing the size of the fire so that over a 'burn' less is wasted getting it going and after cooking/heating. We can light and maintain a 300 gm coal fire in the stoves we have here but it needs a chimney to give useful amounts of heat.
