The gasifier may not be much bigger than the genset, the pipe work and
gas cleanup tend to occupy a lot of space, I never measured actual
dimensions of the ones I have seen. They all seemed to measure run
time in tens of hours per annum rather than 8000+.
Simplistically the fuel consumption is dependant on the cold gas
efficiency and the engine fuel to motive power conversion. In a simple
system the product of these two numbers will be in the order of 20%.
So 100kW(e) will need about 500kW(t) of energy input. 1kg of dry wood
will have a cv of ~18-20MJ which is at worst 5kWhr. Therefore to run
the gasifier to support this electrical demand, assuming negligible
char in the ash from the gasifier, for 1hr you will consume 100kg of
dry wood plus its associated moisture.
Cordner Peacocke and Doug Williams have frequently posted on the
pitfalls and problems in putting this into practice on Gas-L.
